What is HCG and how does it facilitate weight loss?
Human chorionic gonadotropin, also known as hCG, is a hormone naturally produced by the body. It is the hormone found most often in pregnant women where it uniquely functions to allow the body to mobilize fat (instead of muscle mass or protein) and make it available for energy use for both mother and fetus if there is a need.
When HCG is combined with a low-calorie diet, it is highly effective. The body reverts to the available excess fat stores and burns them as a source of energy.
How much weight can I expect to lose with the HCG diet?
Most hCG patients experience weight loss over the full duration of the protocol averaging .5 to 1 lb a day. The lower range of weight loss is typically around 0.5 lb per day, and at the most 3 pounds daily.
Factors that augment faster weight loss include adding/increasing vegetable intake, minimizing red meat, staying within the lower end of the recommended daily calories (500/day) and consuming the recommended minimum of 96 ounces of water daily.
Is it safe or healthy to lose 1 to 2 pounds per day?
hCG weight loss studies have shown that weight loss comes directly from adipose fat tissue rather than lean muscle. In doing so, the weight loss comes directly from fat and does not strip the body of muscle mass or essential vitamins or minerals to maintain a health state during the diet. Consequently, hCG patients report a sense of improved health and significantly less negative health risks that are associated with overweight or obesity.
Obviously, this amount of weight loss is not sustainable long term for any individual and that is why we have specific protocols that are 40 days in duration. If you wish to have subsequent hCG rounds, you must have a minimum of 3 weeks in between your hCG restricted diet phases.
Why the VLCD (very low calorie diet)?
hCG causes your hypothalamus to mobilize stored fat in your body to make it readily available to be burned and used as energy for the body. While you are only consuming 500-800 calories, your hypothalamus is continually releasing the fat stored in your body. Because of this, your body is essentially functioning on much more than your daily caloric intake on the diet. The result is your body using thousands of calories of fat from your body each day instead of consumed calories in your diet.
Will I be hungry on 500-800 calories a day?
From our experience with the hCG protocol, we've yet to have hunger as a significant complaint on the diet.
It is common for mild hunger during the first few days, however this typically subsides by 3-5 days into the diet and you will find small servings to be completely satisfying. This is partly due to your hypothalamus adjusting the way your body metabolizes calories in general, but mostly due to the amount of calories circulating in your system from the fat being released. It is common that hCG dieters feel as though they are struggling to reach the 500 calorie daily allowance.
Can I exercise daily?
No, please! Twenty minutes of walking a day is permitted. Exercise burns calories and therefore causes your hunger to increase. The combination of low calorie intake and exercise could cause your body to go into starvation mode. This can negatively impact your results.
Who is an appropriate candidate for HCG diet?
The majority of men and women can use hCG for weight loss. We recommend for patients with a minimum of 10-15 lbs of desired weight loss. We will require either recent lab work to be reviewed or new lab work drawn to ensure that you don’t have any specific limiting issues that would not allow you to safely implement the protocol. hCG weight loss injections for women who are pregnant or nursing is prohibited.
Are there any side effects of HCG?
There are rarely side effects reported while using hCG at the dosage for weight loss. Occasionally, patients report mild headaches that typically subside rather quickly (most often due to abrupt cessation to sugar or carbohydrates rather than the hCG itself) or more noticeable menstrual cramps or even irregular menstruation during the protocol. Menstruation quickly resumes normal frequency after the protocol is completed.
Keep in mind, hCG used for fertility purposes is a substantially higher dosage, and for that reason when hCG is taken for fertility it has more often reported side effects that are not experienced on the weight loss protocol.
Will I gain the weight back after the HCG diet?
After the hCG treatment, you will find your appetite has changed, your eating behavior will be different and your body (of course!) will be changed. This is the ideal opportunity to adopt the healthy lifestyle necessary to maintain any weight loss plan.
At this point after the hCG phase, you will progress into the “maintenance phase” where you will eat a typical calorie diet for weight loss (1200-1600 calories depending on your metabolic rate) and you will gradually start integrating carbohydrates into your diet. In this phase, exercise is allowed and you can resume your typical exercise regimen. With your hypothalamus reset from the diet phase with hCG injections, your metabolism will be optimized and most patients find they are able to eat moderately without feeling hungry or having intense cravings.
What is the hypothalamus gland?
The hypothalamus resides in the brain and controls multiple functions in your body. In regards to the diet, it moderates the thyroid, adrenal glands, regulation of fat storage and most pertinent, your metabolism.
Is HCG safe for men?
The hCG used for the hCG weight loss protocol is actually already found in men. In fact, it is present in every human tissue, including males and non-pregnant women.
How painful are HCG injections for weight loss?
The hCG injections for weight loss are administered using a very small insulin syringe. They are subcutaneous injections that typically have minimal to no pain.
